“My life is uncomplicated now. Every necessity is conveniently outside my door.”
– Dolores Tottoroto
Dolores was born in Trenton, New Jersey and moved to Hamilton Township after high school. She studied accounting at Rider College and began her finance career at Fort Dix. At the age of 20, she married and devoted her time to her husband, children, and parents. When her children were grown she returned to work for 20 years, retiring in 1992. Not to sit back and relax, she began a third career and joined her husband in financial services.
When her husband became ill, Dolores became his caregiver for several years until he passed in 2006. Although always an independent woman, her daughters became concerned about her living alone. She first downsized to a 55+ community and then to Homestead at Hamilton.
Dolores liked the fact that Homestead is a rental community. “You can just pick up and leave in 30 days if you want,” she said. “It gives you options.”
Dolores chose a one-bedroom assisted living apartment at Homestead to get the help she needs from time to time with housekeeping. Her daughters helped decorate her new apartment. “I had already disposed of unnecessary items prior to moving, so moving day was easy. We had everything put away by that evening.”
Although she lives in the assisted living neighborhood, Dolores can easily participate in programs and events anywhere in the building because the many amenities are spread throughout the community and are easily accessible.
At 87, Dolores loves the exercise room. “I was a little intimated by the equipment at first, but they showed me how to use them and they are really quite gentle. Plus, I love the chair yoga and chair Pilates classes. I like to keep moving and improving myself. There are so many classes you can attend to keep yourself physically and mentally stimulated.”
She likes that she feels welcome anywhere in the building. “You’re not isolated here. I often eat breakfast and lunch in the assisted living dining room, which is light and bright, and then go to the main dining room for dinner. It feels like dining out at a restaurant. We often sit there for hours just talking and having a great time. And the food is delicious.”
Asked what she likes best about living at Homestead and she will quickly say it’s the people. “The people are lovely and the team members are so sweet — there’s not one that isn’t adorable,” said Dolores. “The people make me smile and I like to think I make them smile too.”
