8 Fun Date Night Ideas for Seniors in New Jersey

A first date is exciting, but a romantic evening with a long-time partner can give you a special kind of butterflies. There’s a lot for couples to do around The Homestead, and some of those things you can only do right here in New Jersey. Keep reading for some fun date night ideas.

1. See a Game or a Show

Only an hour’s drive away, the Prudential Center in Newark is a great day trip. The Prudential Center regularly hosts events including concerts and sports games. It’s home to the New Jersey Devils ice hockey team and home of the Seton Hall Pirates college basketball teams, and the New York Red Bulls soccer team plays nearby in Harrison. Grab a snack and a drink for yourself and your date and get lost in the action.

If the Prudential Center isn’t your speed, there are also tons of smaller venues to see live music and art. Live music is easy to find in New Jersey, and the “local” shows can set the perfect mood for your date without denting your wallet. Hamilton Township’s website is a great place to find listings for live music, as well as festivals and other events.

2. Go Classic with Dinner and a Movie

There’s a reason dinner and a movie has remained the go-to date across generations. Whether you’re meeting up with someone for the first time or you’re celebrating your 35th anniversary, there’s nothing like grabbing a bite to eat and watching the latest flick to hit the big screen. Pick a restaurant you’ll both like, pay attention to what movies everyone’s talking about and enjoy each other’s company.

If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend checking out Settimo Cielo Hamilton for a fabulous Italian dinner less than five minutes from Homestead.

3. Take a Trip to Atlantic City

Spend the evening strolling the Atlantic City boardwalk, have a romantic dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe or try your luck at one of the many casinos in the city before cozying up in your hotel room. If you and your date aren’t the gambling type, check out the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium. It’s sure to start some interesting conversations.

4. Or Go to Manhattan

One of the best parts of living in New Jersey is that everything New York City has to offer is not far away – less than a two hour drive. Manhattan can be a romantic place for a date, especially during the winter holidays; try ice skating in Central Park or stop by Rockefeller Center to see the famous Christmas tree.

5. Take a Class Together

It’s always nice to learn new things, so why not make a date out of it? Talk to your partner and see if there are any skills you both want to learn. There are some interesting and out-of-the-box classes you can take nearby. From cooking to dancing, you can find a class that matches your interests. For example, The Sipping Plant in Freehold is a workshop that teaches you how to make and care for a terrarium. If you sign up for a weekly class, the next date will schedule itself!

6. Make It a Double (Date)

Friendships with other couples are nice to have at any stage of a relationship, but a double date may be a particularly good idea when it comes to breaking the ice. The group setting can lighten the mood, take the pressure off and make it easier to relax and get comfortable. Double dates are a great way to build relationships with other couples and establish lasting friendships. Here are a few double date night ideas:

  • Trivia Night
  • Wine Tasting
  • Board Games
  • Sightseeing
  • Karaoke

7. Visit the Aquarium or Zoo

If you’re both animal lovers and you want to go on an active day trip, consider the aquarium or the zoo. The Adventure Aquarium is about an hour from Hamilton, is top-notch and has all kinds of attractions, from the Caribbean Currents walk-through to the Touch a Shark exhibit. It’s also the only aquarium in the world that has hippos, making it well worth the trip.

For those who are more interested in land animals, the Cape May County Park and Zoo can be a great place for a romantic outing. A two hour drive, it’s a little farther than the aquarium, but on the way to Cape May, which is a great place to spend the night for a weekend trip. The zoo’s public park is free and features bike trails, a disc golf course and other game areas. At the zoo, you’ll find giraffes, African lions and zebras among other animals you don’t get to see every day.

8. Stroll Down Memory Lane

It can be refreshing to go out and do something new, but sometimes you just want to stick with what works. If you and your date have been together for a long time, try recreating one of your favorite dates from the past. Do you have a romantic story about the first time you met? Relive it and think about what’s changed and what’s stayed the same.
